🧵 What a week! First Kid’s camp at Thread Your Path was a huge success in my book! These little stitchers had a blast, and so did I 🥰

🧵 It was bittersweet to be having such a fun time with these little folks, then coming home to see all the continued pain and destruction in the western half of the state we call home. I had to keep reminding myself that you can have two conflicting emotions at the same time.

🧵As I sat in my clean, dry studio, I tried to imagine how it would feel to have it all washed away in an instant. It’s not just the materials, but the process for so many of us. It breaks my heart to think of all the makers and creators that find peace of mind in their process, and how they don’t have it when they likely need it the most.

🧵 If there any sewists taking refuge in the triangle that need a sewing machine and fabric to ease their struggle, my space and my supplies are open to you. 🧡

🧵A little glimpse behind the scenes at @paperhandpuppet from a weekend I volunteered.

🧵 When I’m not teaching school or sewing, I’m sewing at Paperhand 💚

🧵In the early 2000’s my family started going to Paperhand shows. It became a yearly pilgrimage, even when we lived two hours away. Every time I would see a show, I would think to myself, “these are my people, these are my friends, we just haven’t met yet.” But I knew inside that someday, I would work with these magical storytellers.

🧵 In 2017, through a long string of fortunate events, it happened!! And I’ve been sewing, laughing, and sweating with them ever since.

🧵 Did you know there are several ways you can get involved with Paperhand? You can volunteer in the studio on Saturdays all summer doing paper mache, cutting, gluing, or sewing. You can be a performer volunteer for a weekend, or be an usher if performing isn’t your thing. You can also join their patreon and support year round.

🧵If you have never heard of Paperhand, or have never been to a show, I would HIGHLY recommend it!! Next weekend is the last weekend to catch it this year. You can get tickets at paperhandpuppet.org Be sure to get there early!! These last few shows always sell out and seats fill up quick!!

🧵I used to daydream, now I worry. Sewing keeps my mind and hands too busy for that nonsense. School was cancelled today due to the hurricane and I had the whole day to think about what ifs, so I decided to take some sewing medicine and make the @sewliberated #stratatop from of a couple pairs of old pants.

🧵I have made this top before, but I’m not very good at picking out fabric. Turns out what I like to look at and what I will wear are two very different things! So I needed a new one that I’m willing to wear when I teach my Strata class.

🧵 An added bonus of upcycling your old clothes is that they are made from fabrics you know you like!! These pants were both pretty worn in the seat and one squat away from an embarrassing accident. I held onto them because the legs were quite full (lots of fabric), they are soft and flowy, and the colors are nice.

🧵I merged the two pairs of pants, connecting the two legs with a flat felled seam that I positioned front and back center. I added a little overall style pocket because everything is better with pockets! Turns out I also have a pair of pants that match it perfectly 👍🏼

🪡 While collecting things around the house to decorate the new sewing studio, I realized I have a gold mine of treasures that were handed down to me.

🪡 These three baby quilts were hand sewn by my Grandma Pauline and given to us as babies. I kept them for my children, but didn’t use them much because I cared too much about them 🧡

🪡 These fabric patterns are some of the earliest imprints on my brain. I loved looking at each tiny square in its own white frame. They feel so familiar and transport me to childhood. And I’m sure they are made from scraps.

🪡 My Grandma Pauline didn’t waste ANYTHING. She reused wrapping paper and tin foil until there was nothing left of it. The white squares are a familiar tea towel fabric she taught me to hem with. That’s a story for another day 🧡

🪡I want to give them a much needed cleaning before hanging them with love in my new studio. But boy am I nervous. Two of them are in good shape. But one, the one I remember being wrapped in for years, has several squares missing. In order to avoid further damage, I put it inside a pillowcase to protect it. I set the washer to delicate, threw in a sprinkle of @charlies_soap ,crossed my fingers and hit start. I might have also said a little prayer to my Grandma Pauline 🧡
